How To Improve Hand Writing Skills Among Students

Writing is a complex skill which most students actually need in order to successfully go through secondary school. Because everything is based on writing during academic years, a student who possesses good writing skills will automatically do better at everything -exams, essays, assignments, etc.

Writing is virtually part of everything we do. It is one of the most powerful tools used to communicate our knowledge, emotions and beliefs, across distance and time. Writing is also a fundamental part of the school curriculum as an outcome and as a means to demonstrate learning across subjects and grades.

Students’ writing skills are a thing of concern to both parents and teachers. While it appears to be the duty of the teacher to help their students develop good handwriting, parents have to also corroborate the efforts of the teachers by helping their kids after school hours.

A good handwriting is not without its merits as it improves grades, memory, reading, and spelling scores. Reading a bad handwriting is seriously torturous, comparable to squinting at the sun. I could remember when my niece was preparing to write her second term exam, she asked I help her with her revision, within the course of the revision, at some point, she could not read her note; when I tried also, I could not either. As a result of this, the revision was cut short. I advised that she practice continuously the handwriting book, for better improvement.

How then can the handwriting skill of students be improved upon?  Below are some pointers that will prove helpful if applied:

  • Continuous practice is paramount
  • Spacing of words
  • Slow your writing down (do not rush)
  • Examine hand-writings that you like
  • Try a variety of writing utensils
  • School owners should introduce the use of the book ‘Handwriting without tears’
  • They should make use of handwriting checklists as a guide to rate the improvement process.

The points mentioned above are not exclusive. Parents and teachers can be resourceful, creative and innovative in the methods they employ in helping the students improve on their handwriting. These methods should be adapted to the learning nature and style of the child in order to yield optimum results.
