This is Down’s Syndrome

…And so this is Down Syndrome (DS)

Often times, I find that parents are broken when this is pronounced. They reject it and refuse to accept! Today, I want to celebrate parents of Down’s babies. You are extraordinary, don’t think less of yourself. You did not cause DS!

I know a lot of people wonder why  babies born are with Down’s syndrome?

It is a genetic disorder (this does not mean inherited) that causes an abnormal number of chromosomes. DS is characterized by physical growth delay, typical facial appearance and varying degrees of intellectual disability. There are three types of DS.

In this post, I want to focus on how you can get improved outcome with DS babies.

First, is to accept it as early as possible.

Secondly, Chromosomal tests are available and confirmatory, it can tell what type of DS and this can guide in counselling you.

Thirdly, there are two things you must check: Thyroid function and the heart.

The thyroid function should be checked because if thyroid hormones are low, it further limits the intellectual development. And low thyroid hormones are treatable!

Heart, because one out of every two children with Down’s may have congenital abnormality of the heart. The earlier you know, the sooner you can take care of it. Ask your Paediatrician for routine echocardiography (means heart scan)

Are you or someone you know dealing with DS?

Today, I stand with you. Let’s all love the DS children and give them our best. The truth is, ‘they can be really lovable’. Get your child checked today.

Feel free to participate in this advocacy and share.
